About this project
The goal of the WoodPests project is to provide users with an online tool for identifying and monitoring wood pests. Wood is an extremely valuable and renewable resource for human society, and thus its production is becoming increasingly important. Wood is produced in forests or intensively managed plantations. Growing trees are attacked by a wide range of pests that slow their growth, damage the trunk, branches, or leaves, and in more severe cases, cause the dieback of parts of the crowns or entire trees. Managing and control of these species is the duty of forest owners and managers.
After being felled, wood is processed in various ways. However, even during processing and storage, wood can be infested by certain pests, or the effects of pests from the forests can become evident. Wood may have various holes, wounds, rot, etc. Little attention is paid to identifying wood pests at this stage. To fill this "gap in the market," we decided to provide a tool for wood processors, as well as forest owners and managers, to identify and assess wood damage.
