Hat 4-20 cm wide, convex to shallowly vase-shaped, round to kidney-shaped, smooth, dry, dark reddish brown to dark brown, often slightly paler at the edges. The pores are white, with age they are off-white. Depth central, eccentric to lateral, 1 - 6 cm long, straight, dry, pale under the hat and black at the base, over time the whole depth black. Growing in autumn and winter, the mycelium causes white rot of infested branches and trunks.
Presence of dark brown to dark red fruiting bodies on dead wood.
