The star-shaped feeding trace with the clearly visible nuptial chamber, egg and larvae galleries cut into wood. It attacks pines with thinner bark, tree trunks in younger stands, twigs and treetops in older ones. It has two generations per year. Adults of the first generation fly in May, and those of the second generation in July-August. An outbreak can appear after windbreaks and then it can even severely damage young pine trees and crowns of older ones.
