This is the largest member of the Hylesinus genus in Europe. It excavates tunnels under the bark. Its gallery system has two branches perpendicular to the trunk axis. They are only 4–6 cm long and and 3 mm wide. The larvae mine long tunnels. The larch elm bark beetle lives under the bark of thicker ash trunks, where it is less common than Hylesinus varius = fraxini. The adult insect is 4–6 mm long.
